UNCHILD Returns After Seven Months, Aiming to Become K-POP's Next Concept Queens
K-POP girl group UNCHILD is back after seven months, following a longer-than-expected break and the temporary departure of member Hiki from group activities. Now promoting as five, the members are hoping to make up for lost time with a bolder sound and a quirky superhero concept.
UNCHILD members Tina, Na Haeun, Park Yeeun, Ako and Evon held a media showcase at NOL Theater Hapjeong in Seoul on Nov. 5 to introduce their second digital single, "TiNG TiNG," their first new release since debuting in April.
"At our debut showcase, I was 100 percent nervous," Haeun said. "This time, I'm more excited to finally share our stories and show what we've been working on."
The road to their first comeback wasn't entirely smooth. The release was pushed back from its original schedule, leaving the members disappointed but determined to use the extra time to improve.
"Of course, we were disappointed because we'd been looking forward to coming back," Evon said. "But what mattered most was showing something good to the fans who had been waiting for us."
For Haeun, one message from fans stayed with her throughout the break: "I just miss you."
Yeeun admitted she worried about whether fans would continue waiting. "Seeing them wait for us, I kept hoping they wouldn't leave," she said. "I was also really thankful that they were concerned about us."
She added that having fans has been the biggest change since debut. While the members previously relied mainly on one another as trainees, even a single supportive comment now gives them strength.
The group is also making its comeback without Hiki, who went on hiatus on June 12 after doctors advised her to rest due to health concerns.
"The most important thing right now is for Hiki to get better," Yeeun said, adding that the members continue to support one another. Hiki had also sent them an encouraging message the previous evening, wishing them luck at the showcase.
For their return, UNCHILD has taken its unusual identity a step further. At debut, the group embraced the image of a "green frog," a Korean expression associated with someone who does things differently from others. This time, they've transformed into "poison dart frogs," presenting themselves as eccentric superheroes who have landed on Earth.
"We wanted to show UNCHILD confidently following our own path, with all our different personalities," Yeeun explained.
The new single features two tracks, lead song "TiNG TiNG" and B-side "Light." "TiNG TiNG" is a French house track built around repetitive loops, heavy bass and mechanical synthesizers. Its catchy hook and video game-inspired lyrics reflect the group's determination to approach unfamiliar challenges in their own way.
Tina picked the lyric "We're unusual from the moment we appear" as her favorite, saying it captures how the members embrace what makes them different.
The choreography also plays into the superhero storyline. Haeun practiced locking for the first time, while a dance-break sequence depicts the five members chasing a frog. Ako focused on facial expressions to bring out the group's cartoon-like personalities.
The music video features cinematic storytelling and action scenes, which Haeun admitted were challenging to film.
"When I first watched it, I covered my mouth in surprise because it opened like a movie instead of immediately showing us," she said. "It turned out even more cinematic than I'd imagined."
Meanwhile, B-side "Light" explores the curiosity of someone who becomes fascinated by new things and absorbs different experiences into their identity. Evon described it as a song about gradually becoming colored by different interests, while Ako said it captures UNCHILD's many sides.
The members also expressed interest in taking a more active role in their music. Haeun revealed that choreography created by Hiki had previously been selected for a performance. Although her own ideas weren't chosen this time, she hopes to contribute to choreography, styling and production in the future. Evon said she wants to study songwriting and eventually write lyrics for the group.
Looking back on their debut promotions, Haeun recalled appearing on Mnet's "M Countdown" for the first time.
"Seeing all the senior artists standing there made it finally sink in that we'd debuted," she said. "After we came offstage, we all hugged each other and cried."
As for their goals, Evon said the group hopes to earn the title of "concept queens."
"We put a lot of thought into connecting the visuals, performance, music and storyline this time," she said.
Yeeun, meanwhile, hopes the comeback will help UNCHILD reach beyond its existing fanbase. "I hope this album gives more people a reason to become interested in us," she said. "I want us to catch the general public's attention, too."
UNCHILD's second digital single, "TiNG TiNG," will be released on major streaming platforms at 6 p.m. KST on Nov. 5.
